Lucky Number 13 – We’ve Officially Become a Teenager

On November 28th, 2011, We Are Pink was born.

The world back then looked a little different – Instagram was just a baby, TikTok didn’t exist, and ‘going viral’ mostly referred to actual colds.

At the time, Nicola Pink – formerly known as Nicola Rowlands – was working in journalism, having spent years in the newsroom shaping her storytelling skills and honing her passion for getting the right message out there.

What started as a one-woman operation, with nothing more than a hired laptop and a back-bedroom desk, quickly grew into a business with a focus on helping companies tell their stories in a way that resonated with their audiences.

Over the years, the business has evolved and grown. It’s gone through a few names along the way – Nicola Rowlands Communications at the start, Pink Media when Nicola got married and embraced her colourful name, and eventually becoming We Are Pink; the last shift feeling extremely significant.

It wasn’t just Nicola’s business anymore. It was a collective effort, a family of experts working together, which is why it felt right to make it *ours* rather than *mine*.

Fast forward 13 years, and here we are – a team of 12, including six in the office and six incredible freelancers who feel just as much a part of the family. Many of these freelancers have been with us for years, building strong relationships and creating a network of experts who are the best in their fields.

It feels fitting, in a way – Nicola herself was once a freelancer, and now, We Are Pink champions that same community, ensuring they have opportunities to grow while delivering the best expertise to our clients.

The past 13 years have been full of growth and change. We’ve seen the marketing and PR landscape evolve beyond recognition. Back in 2011, social media was still a novelty for many businesses, influencer marketing wasn’t even a concept and websites were often little more than digital brochures. Today, we create video-first campaigns, leverage influencer networks, and build fully integrated strategies for clients across PR, social media, design, websites and events.

Our clients range from business improvement districts, construction firms, solicitors, shopping destinations, national charities and hotel chains – and more. We’ve worked with a wide variety of clients, always tailoring our approach to suit their unique needs.

It hasn’t always been easy. Like many businesses, we battled through the pandemic, supporting clients as they navigated uncertainty while keeping our own team connected and motivated.

We’ve welcomed incredible team members, said bittersweet goodbyes to a few and celebrated some pretty big wins along the way. One standout moment came last year when we moved into our Baltic Triangle office – a space we first set eyes on six years earlier and called our “dream office.” Back then, it felt out of reach, but last year it became our creative home – a space where ideas flow, campaigns come to life, and the kettle is always on.

As we officially become a teenager, we’re taking a moment to celebrate everything that’s brought us here. From long-standing clients like Delifonseca, who’ve trusted us for over a decade, to newer partnerships with Blackpool BID and Warrington’s Time Square, every project has shaped who we are today.

We’re incredibly proud of the journey so far – not just for building a business, but for creating a family of experts and collaborators who make We Are Pink what it is. Thank you to our clients, our team (in the office and beyond), and everyone who’s been part of this adventure.
