SEP Geospatial is advising businesses across the UK to prepare for major mobile network changes that could affect connected devices still relying on 2G technology.

From Wednesday, October 1st, Virgin Media O2 will switch off its 2G roaming network nationwide. Older IoT devices and controllers that depend on 2G connections may no longer operate. SEP Geospatial estimates around 15% of client traffic still uses 2G, underlining the potential scale of the disruption.

Founded in 2017, SEP supplies surveying and geospatial technology nationwide, providing equipment hire and purchase, training, and technical support. Drawing on its experience as an authorised distributor for global brands including Trimble, FARO, Nikon, and Spectra Geospatial, SEP helps businesses transition older devices to modern networks.

Oliver Brooks, Managing Director of SEP Geospatial, said: “Checking your devices now is the best way to avoid downtime and prepare for future network changes. By upgrading, businesses not only protect themselves against disruption but also benefit from faster, more secure, and more resilient connectivity.”

Sectors such as utilities, construction, and transport are particularly exposed, as many rely on older controllers and IoT systems. Businesses can transition devices to 4G, 5G, or multi-network SIMs to maintain reliable operations. SEP supports companies through this process, leveraging its experience with cutting-edge geospatial and connectivity solutions.

Chris Doohan, Technical Manager at SEP Geospatial, said: “The first step is understanding which devices are still running on 2G, and many businesses don’t realise how many of their controllers and sensors do. We’re helping clients with audits, firmware updates, and SIM swaps. It’s a very manageable process if started early, but delaying could mean critical equipment stops working overnight.”

Devices already using 4G will continue to connect to O2, EE, 3, and Vodafone 4G networks where available. Multi-network SIMs will no longer connect to O2’s 2G network after October 1st. EE and Vodafone currently plan to maintain 2G service until later in the decade, though this could change.
